I agree that Linux is excellent if you're only looking to play a few simple games, but mainly want to use it for programming, modding etc. While this may all be true, Linux isn't the best option for gamers due to it's lack of support. The graphics engine in 10.9 went to single threaded over the multi-threaded engine in 10.8, and had a loop that limited frame rates to only 60 FPS, regardless of your system's graphics card (there was some talk about this in the forums, specifically with those playing Minecraft). They pulled their iOS developers in to work on a desktop kernel. After the Apple made the move from 10.8 to 10.9, things went down hill. That is the official word from Microsoft. After Windows 10, there will be no new versions, only software patches.
Windows 10 will be the last Windows version ever. For best gaming performance, select the "lowlatency" kernel-but it performs well with the stock kernel. With Ubuntu, there is no need to hunt for driver CDs or wait for USB devices to be discovered when they're plugged in for the first time.
